Beach Portraits: Bald Head Island

Over the July 4th holiday, I had the opportunity to visit Bald Head Island. It was love at first ferry ride and I can't wait to return. While I was there I was delighted to meet Jennifer and her beautiful family. We got together for a family portrait session and had a great time running up and down the sand. I would like to begin this post with the words of Stefanie Golden, a dear friend and one of the subjects in the featured photographs.

"These portraits are just AMAZING! We couldn't be happier with our first family portraits. My husband is in the Navy and was deployed the day after we came home from the hospital with our now 9 month old. So, we were never able to take any professional family photos. I had gotten the sailor dresses for the girls to wear when we picked up daddy from the airport after a LONG 6 month deployment. Luckily they still were able to wear them by the time we had the chance to finally take our first family portraits. E.L. Photography did a fanastic job in capturing the love that we have for one another and the personalities of our little girls. THANK YOU!!!!"

With the official first day of summer behind us, it's time for those long awaited beach vacations! What better time to get the sun kissed gang together and create some memories by the sea. Beach portrait sessions are available on a limited basis at any location on the coast of North Carolina, OBX, Southern Virginia, and North Myrtle Beach. Investments start at $300 and include a print credit to be used toward your portrait order.

As many of you know I am working on expanding my fine art portfolio for my January submission to the East Carolina University School of Art and Design MFA program. There are only two spots available each year, so I really want to knock the socks off the selection committee with my submission. My plan is to begin a series of works that deal with the sensory experiences that trigger our memories. As this is such a broad topic, I will be focusing on the sensory elements that create “home”.

I know this may sound a bit strange and hard to picture. I am still working on fully realizing the concept myself. Here are a few solid facts that will help define the parameters of the project. I hope that these will be helpful in making your decision about participating.

-You do not have to be a client of mine or become a client to participate. All ages are welcome, however I would prefer to work with individuals who are 18 years and older.

-I will be asking you questions about your childhood home, and places you occupied in the time in between. This information will be used to create a piece that visually states your unique experience. It is important that you are able to communicate these things to me so that I can accurately represent your experience.

-Your portrait will be made in my studio or on location, depending on the nature of the piece we are creating together.

-There will be NO nudity or obligations to do anything that you are uncomfortable with.

This is where you may choose to participate or perhaps pass the information on to someone else. If you are interested in participating in this experience, please contact me via phone or email. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the series, to the best of my ability.

Katelyn's Senior Session: Atlantic Beach

We could not have had a better day for Katelyn's Senior Portrait Session at Atlantic Beach, NC! The sky was a classic Carolina Blue and the weather was perfect.
Katelyn chose to start at the historic Ft. Macon, to highlight her interest in history, in particular the Civil War. As we moved around the fort she would take every opportunity to check out the historical information and take in the sights.

We closed down the fort and moved on to the beach. I love using the coast as a backdrop! We had an audience on the beach, but Katelyn took it in stride and did a great job!!

Bella had a tea party...

Bella had a tea party in the park.

She enthusiasticly greeting her dolly friends and served them tea under the magnolia tree.

They chatted about cupcakes and unicorns and giggled the morning away.

It was a great day for tea.

I just couldn't resist. The whole thing seemed like something from a story book. Bella was perfect for this little setup and she didi a wonderful job. We had a wonderful time at a little park in Farmville, NC on a brisk spring morning. Below is a photo of Bella's Mama helping to keep spirits high. Thanks, Kathy and Bella for a great morning!

Mason - Mayor of the House

So I had a wonderful session, just the other week, with Mason and his Mama. They were two of the brave souls that answered my call for models for some conceptual work. Well we finally had the opportunity to collaborate and I am just tickled pink with the results. Mason is one of the most interesting young men I have ever met. An imagination that makes one wonder where their sense of adventure has gone and a laid back attitude that everyone should embrace, at least for a little while.
We met up down on Main in Farmville, NC and found some great little nooks for the session. Thanks Mason and Kathy for playing along with me - I had a great time working with you both!

Pet Portrait Event Recap!

April 30th was a beautiful day in Eastern NC and the perfect time for the much anticipated Pet Portrait Event! Participants provided a generous amount of pet food for the Green County Animal Shelter and I had a great time meeting their beautiful families.

I like to thank Amy Wade and Emily Jackson of Shirley Plantation Estates for the generous donation of their property for the event. It was such a blessing to have the opportunity to work there and I hope to return for more portrait events in the future.

I hope to have another pet portrait event in the fall to gather blankets and cleaning supplies for the winter months. I hope that we will have another great turn out of great pets and their families.

Thank you to everyone who participated! Here are a few of my favorites from the event.

The folks at the shelter were pleasantly surprised when I arrived with a cornucopia of tasty vitals for their residents. Randy, Animal Control Officer, Lynn, GCAS staff member and Health Director for Greene County, Mr. Rhodes, graciously agreed to pose for a picture.

Fairytales and Sunshine

These were the words that inspired a recent shoot with some wonderful young ladies. We got together on an early Spring afternoon to be creative and just have fun. A portrait event for pets and their people to benefit the Greene County Animal Shelter

will be held April 30, 2011 at the Shirley Plantation Estates in Snow Hill. Greene County

Animal Shelter is in need of supplies to care for the resident pets. In an effort to raise

awareness and bring in much needed supplies, E.L. Photography is donating a portrait

event in exchange for donations of pet care items with a value of $20.00 or more.

Please call Erica Letchworth at 252.714.7881 to schedule your session, which will be

held at Shirley Plantation Estates, located at 342 Shirley Plantation Drive, Snow Hill, NC.

In an effort to provide a sizable donation to the Greene County Animal Shelter, E.L.

Photography will be providing 20 minute portrait sessions and a complimentary gift print

to all participants. In lieu of a traditional sitting fee E.L. Photography will be accepting

donations of dog, puppy, cat and kitten food, treats, toys, galvanized metal bowls and

buckets with a monetary value of $20.00 or more. Participants may choose to have a

portrait of their pet or their family and pet.

Happy spring everyone! This is my favorite time of year and I am looking forward to all of the wonderful portrait sessions planned for this beautiful time of year.

Baby W: 4 months

Nothing is more adorable than the giggles and gurgles of a baby. This little is a member of the Sweet Baby Collection, enrolled before birth. He always gives me the best expressions and I look forward to photographing him every time. This is his 4 month session and his grandma informed me that he will be sitting up on his own very soon. Help Portrait is December 4th and the Greenville team will be photographing good folks who are having a little hard luck.

Photographers and volunteers are coming together for this project in the spirit of giving to give a little holiday cheer. It is our goal to give each client a photo from the session with their help portrait photographer. In order to achieve our goal I am asking for your help!

Our fearless Help Portrait leader, Laurie Crutchfield, has organized a raffle for a mini session from with one of six sensational photogs. For each $25 you donate you will be entered into a drawing to win a mini-session, lasting 30 minutes, as well as a CD with 15 high res images. The images are edited and the copyrights are included!

There are a few things that you should know before you enter...

#1 - these sessions have to be used by June 1, 2011 and the date has to be mutual between the photographer and the winner.

#2 - the money raised is not tax deductible but will go straight to Help-Portrait Greenville NC to cover all expenses.

#3 - names will be drawn randomly and you will be matched randomly with one of our amazing photographers

I'm not sure if it's the anniversary of my graduation or my recent trip to NYC to visit the International Center of Photography, but I have experienced a surge of creative inspiration that has been missing for a while. I hope to share the product of this inspiration with all of you in the form of new art work in the Spring.

For now, I thought I would share a little something special that ties in culture, Christmas and fun. First, I would recommend checking out the Opera Company of Philadelphia as they blow the doors off of some Handel's Hallelujah Chorus. Baby W: Welcome Home

Nikki: Baby Bump!

We started out at the house to document the nursery and then out into the wilderness on the best trail ride I've ever experienced. The Princess and the Frog: Mary-Marshall's Bridal Session

I love bridal portrait sessions! The bride gets to experience her bridal ensemble all together for the first time. She is radiant with novelty of it all and excited about the session ahead. I have the opportunity to make beautiful portraits,one after the other, in an picturesque setting with a beautiful subject.

It's the bee's knees.

Mary-Marshall's bridal session was no different. I met Mary-Marshall, her sister Molly, and our friend and my past client Nikki at the JC Raulston Arboretum on the campus of NC State University. As we wondered through the various gardens we found ideal settings around every turn. Here are a few of my favorites.

When this little guy asked for a kiss, Mary-Marshall had to explain that she had already found her prince.

Big Reveal!

Hello Everyone! I am so excited to announce the big reveal of the

E.L. Photography Studio!!

I've been working on this little house since June and it is finally ready for all the new studio work that is on the books for the Fall and Winter. The E.L. Photography studio is nestled in a sweet little farm house in Greene County, NC at 258 Edmundson Road.

These two areas are referred to as the dark room and light room. The dark room is used for low key session and is the primary strobe room. The darkroom is complete with exotic wood paneling, can't you just smell the 70's! The light room serves as the natural light area as well as a high key shooting room.

More paneling! And here we have the kitchen, complete with explosion proof refrigerator. You have to have your priorities : ) And the bottom photo is a peek down the hallway that accesses the session rooms, the loo and the sales room at the end.

Ask my mother and she will tell you that I have had a thing for bathrooms since I was very young. So with that said this room was very important for me to have complete and fabulous. There is also the perfect little niche for last minute touches to makeup and hair. Oh, and the photo at the top left is in the hallway. It's a phone niche, isn't that fabulous?

Finally, the sales room. As I await the arrival of my projection system this room serves as a mini gallery. I had some wonderful help with the finishing this room and I am just thrilled with the outcome.

I'm so excited that this has all come together and I want to pass on the good to my fabulous clients! So, I have some extra special surprises for everyone!

The little girl in the photos below is my very dear God-Daughter AJ (that's what I like to call her much to her mother's disapproval). She's smart and pretty and full of character and I was so happy when I had the chance to visit her recently. We headed over to the Norfolk Botanical Gardens and got a few frames before the bottom fell out and we had to take shelter in the flooding cafe. What I saw of the gardens was beautiful and I hope to return one day soon.
But for now I get to share a few of my favorites from our adventure together.

I had the very good fortune to meet Tess in the SOAD darkrooms of ECU (photo department of course). Well Tess graduated and went on back to her home town so that she could be close to her sweetie Ricky. Last Summer Tess emailed me to announce the good news.. she needed a wedding photographer!!

I had the fortuitous occasion to meet Tess in the ECU photography labs. She and I chatted many hours away as we worked on our portfolios. I even coxed her into shooting a wedding with me one very HOT June day. I had her positioned on the roof of the porch to snag a photo of the bride coming down the isle. Unfortunately her shoes began to melt due to the extreme heat of the tin roof. But she was a trooper and finished the day with me rather than running away screaming. Despite that interesting adventure Tess called on me last Fall to serve as her wedding photographer and at last the big weekend is here. I am so very happy for Tess and Ricky, they are a perfect fit and I know this is going to be a Fabulous weekend! Check back for new sneek peeks!

Well I was very blessed to have found a wonderful client who thought I was fun and she let me take her picture on a sunny spring afternoon. She was only 8 days old when I had the opportunity to create some of the very first portraits in a lifetime of photo opportunities. Sauls Family: Baby Bump!

That is why I am so honored to have the opportunity to photograph the Sauls family as they anticipate the arrival of their new baby girl. I had the privilege of photographing Michael and Ginny's wedding back in the summer of 2008. As you can see in the image below they are a knock out couple. Julie and Justin were sealed at the Rexburg Temple, Idaho two days prior to their ring ceremony in North Carolina! The event took place at the historic La Grange Presbyterian Church and I had the opportunity of a lifetime to photograph two very dear friends. Whitney and Trey where married on a tiny island off the coast of Kinston, NC. Guests watched Whitney and Trey exchange their promises from hay bales covered with heirloom quilts while the early autumn sun slowly set in the background.

Great food, friendly guests and two very cute newly weds made this another fabulous wedding. I was fortunate to have Jessi Braxton of Braxton PhotoGraphic there to shoot with me. Here are a few of my favorites from their big day!

Nikki & Paul: Wed!

Nikki was referred to me by one of my favorites brides Emily. I have had a wonderful time working with Nikki and Paul as well as Nikki's mother and all of her wonderful friends. They all participated in one of the most unique bridal sessions I have ever had the opportunity to shoot. You can see some images form that session in the previous post.
Nikki and Paul tied the knot back in February and picked one of the prettiest days to say their vows. Even though the temperatures were low these two braved the outdoors for one of the best pre ceremony photo shoots I have ever seen. Nikki and Paul elected to do all of their formal shots alone and with family and friends before the ceremony. So we set up a special little moment for them to see each other for the first time on their wedding day. It's was very cute and I think they will remember it ever time they see the front of their hometown church. Congratulations Nikki & Paul!

Becky and Josh are a fabulous! We got together at the beach earlier this year for their engagement session and had an awesome time!
So we got together again during Hurricane/Tropical Storm Ike to shoot their wedding. Power came on 30 minutes before I arrived!! WOW!

No Guts .. No Glory!

So I was shooting a wedding last weekend and something very sad happened. I didi some sort of kung foo ninja move I didn't know I knew and slung my camera in a way that was not conducive to the manufacturing of my 50mm lens. Apparently the weight of the "faux fisheye filter" I had on there was too much for the little fella to bear. My fellow photographer Beth handed the lens to me and there were the parts of the lens you don't want to see in full view.. I didn't cry but I was very sad. But my grief was brief 'cause I gots me a new lens. So here is an homage to the fallen.. a bit of old shown thru new. enjoy.
